Christmas Brown Hare

Christmas Brown Hare

It’s thought that the brown hare (originally from central Asia) was brought over by the Romans. Though not technically native, the hare has become ‘naturalised’ since its arrival and is now a much-loved member of our countryside.

The charismatic species is threatened by agricultural intensification and human persecution. It is the only ‘game’ species in the UK without a closed season, so is hunted all year round for sport. There isn’t much data on current population trends but some are campaigning for legal protection for the brown hare during its breeding season.
